A Mature Believer is…

matureAccording to Paul, what does maturity look like for the believer?  Maturity is not being held down by the past, believing that Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection are sufficient even for the worst that you have ever done, and pressing forward in worship and obedience knowing that Heaven awaits.

Remember just a second ago when I said, “Paul knows this and Paul knows that?”  Well, maturity as a believer in Christ is you knowing those things.

So, let’s personalize them for a moment as we head towards a conclusion.  Paul knew that God has removed his sin and guilt, right?  Maturity for you is to say, “I know God has removed my sin AND my guilt.”  Paul knew that he had been called up to Heaven to enjoy Jesus Christ.

Maturity for you is to say, “I know God has called me up to Heaven to enjoy Jesus Christ.”  And Paul knew what pressing forward meant.  Maturity for you means no longer beating yourself up for your past sins, growing in knowing all that God has gifted you, and then growing in obedience and worship.

The excerpt above is from this past week’s sermon at Evident Grace Fellowship where we explored how hope in Christ is so secure, God’s commands, and we can count on it.  The devotional pdf’s, kindle, and audio are up.

God Takes Great Pleasure in Enabling Change in You.

change-sameYou can pray Philippians 2:13 as a personal prayer with great hope that God will answer it.

“Dear God of peace, thank you for raising Jesus from the dead so that He might shepherd and guide me.  And knowing that you brought Jesus back from the dead encourages me to pray that you are able to equip me with everything good so that I might do your will.  Please work within me whatever is pleasing in your sight through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.”

You can pray that knowing that God works in you and me to work and will whatever is pleasing to Him.  So right now, if you have grown tired in asking God to help repair a relationship, if you have given up on ever conquering a habitual sin, if you have given up on trying to read your bible, pray, share the Gospel or even just getting along with your friends, your spouse, or your kids, you can pray knowing God has promised to work and will in your life.

Evident Grace Taking Up a Special Offering for Oklahoma Diasaster Relief

ImageWatching the devastation and heartbreak of the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma have been difficult for all us, I imagine.  Interwoven in the footage have been some wonderful stories of redemption and rescue, but unfortunately, they are few and far between compared to the images of tragedy.

It is at times like this that Evident Grace can be thankful that we are part of a denomination because the PCA already has organizations and systems in place to assist in disasters like this.  The MNA Disaster Response Teams have quickly moved in giving aid, and they have posted information as to how we can assist.

There is a specific way in which we can help these folks help the citizens of Oklahoma who are hurting.  This Sunday, at Evident Grace, we are going to being taking up a second offering.  We will have our first offering of worship which goes to the day to day ministry needs of EG and our surrounding community.  But following that, we will take up a second offering that will 100% be directed towards mercy and relief in Oklahoma.

We will be able to process both cash and check donations.  All checks will need to be made out to “MNA Disaster Response” with “2013 Tornado Relief-Oklahoma” on the memo line.  We will provide this information again on Sunday in case you need it.

On top of that, please join us in prayer asking God for mercy and for Christ to be lifted up among all the hurting communities of Oklahoma.

If you would like to join us for worship, we meet at 10:30 in the comedy club above Liberty Lanes, and you can find directions below.

Thoughts on Finding Hope when Hope Left Long Ago

hopeexitYour mindset may be, “Well, I’m going to assume the worst, and that way I won’t ever be disappointed again.  Because if I hope for things and I don’t get them, I just get more disillusioned.  I am a realist.”

There are a lot of folks living this way.  A lot of you.  But here is something I want us all to wrestle with.  The bible gives us every reason to have hope, so much so, that we are actually commanded to have hope.

Keeping the Conversation Going

ImageExcitedly, Evident Grace is continuing ours devotional pdf series accompanying the “Partners & Partakers” series.  But now, we have gladly added audio of our sermons as well.  The goal with each of these is to further our conversation around the book of Philippians while also giving folks the opportunity to catch up if they’ve missed a service.

Join Our Wonderful Legacy of Local Mission

ImagePart of the desire of what we are doing at Evident Grace is not only to grow as a young church but to also continue in the wonderful heritage and legacy of church planting that is ours.

Evident Grace came about by the generous and faithful vision of New Life in Christ Church in Fredericksburg and Hope of Christ Church in Stafford.  Our pastor, Gordon Duncan, was an elder at Redeemer Church which planted six churches in its history including the one that Gordon planted before Evident Grace.

This incredible heritage and legacy is part of our DNA.  While we grow, we want to dream about supporting our other churches, and we want to put plans into place to eventually plant one ourselves.  This gives us a vision of connectivity not only to our denomination but to other Christ-preaching networks that plant and want to plant churches as well.

You can walk with us in this wonderful legacy.  We are presently transforming our services into devotional pdf’s that can be downloaded for study and encouragement.  That enables our folks to play a greater part in our maturity, and hopefully, they will enable you to be a part of growth with us.  Hopefully, these will serve as a wonderful chronicle of what God is doing and give us a hope of what He He might do along the way.

If you would like to study with us as we undertake the journey, there are two ways you can do that.  We offer these devotionals in two formats.  First, you can download them directly in pdf format at absolutely not cost.  The links below will give you the opportunity to pay if you want, but just type $0, and you do not have to give any credit card information.  You will receive an email with the pdf’s.  You can find the downloads at

We are also now offering these devotionals at Amazon’s Kindle.  These cost $.99.  Unfortunately, Amazon charges to distribute these, but any money made on from Kindle will be sent right back to Evident Grace.

The goal here is not to sell or distribute a bunch of pdf’s.  The hope is to enable greater conversations around what we are studying as a church so the Gospel can form a culture among us.  We hope these help, and we will be updating them each week.

In addition, we send out a prayer letter each week.  If you would like to receive that, email Gordon at jgordonduncan@yahoo.com.

Thanks.

Evident Grace Devotions to Further the Conversation

ImageOne of the things we are hoping to do at Evident Grace Fellowship is establish a conversation throughout the week about what we study on Sunday.  Since we launched for services three weeks ago, we have been studying the book of Philippians in a series entitled, “Partners & Partakers”.  During our services, we offer questions within the bulletin to enable that conversation, and we also offer a children’s bulletin tailored to various age groups.

But most excitedly, we are offering devotional pdf’s of the sermons to enable the conversations.  These can be downloaded and shared so that individuals, families, and pretty much whoever wants to study can dig in a little deeper to what we talk about on Sunday.  They are also great for catching up on the sermon if you miss a Sunday.
